This sumptious guide book gives you glorious photographs of Japan combined with excellent information which makes this an indispensable guide book to use whilst travelling in Japan. If you like a visual guide and to be able to see what places look like then this is the guide for you. I would use it in conjunction with another guide, but you could manage to go to Japan with this guide alone. The maps aren't bad and are all in colour. Some of the places it suggests to visit don't get mentioned in other guides and of course within each section advice on shopping, eating, etc. At the back it gives you advice on money, travel, first aid, hotels. It is well laid out but if you are backpacking I would probably choose a lonely planet or rough guide. All in all a very useful guide It also gives you a beautiful reminder of your trip. I used this constantly whilst in Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Briljant travelguides   March 22, 2010

A very detailed travel guide, which 'shows' Japan as it is. You have the feeling of being there while flipping through the book. With beautiful photo's and diagrams of buildings and places, the book explains some of the typical japanse cultural items. Maybe the only thing that is missing is some more info on good restaurants and different kinds of food. But for a first impression of what Japan is like, the eyewitness guide will do the trick!! For those interested, the're also available in dutch, named 'Capitool gids', but the content is exactly the same.
And thank you Amazon for the very good prize!

4 out of 5 stars The essential guide to Japan   January 2, 2010

We're planning to go on holiday to Japan in 2011, and so have purchased a few books in advance to help us plan our trip. I've purchased Dorling Kindersley books for years, and always found them reliable and thorough.

The book is listed on Amazon as a hardback, however it's actually a very sturdy paperback. The cover is glossy and thick, and not easily damaged. This makes it excellent for taking around in your bag while travelling. What I am staggered by is the weight of the book though, despite being only slightly bigger than a paperback and 416 pages, it's as heavy as the average hard backed cook book.

This guide covers the major cities and areas in Japan, and the best attractions and sights those areas have to offer. The book is in full colour, with some fantastic, inspirational photographs throughout. The book is also interspersed with maps of the areas, as well as public transport details.

The guide also gives detailed background information about Japan's history and sights, which is very helpful when exploring. Each section gives details on local hotels and restaurants to cater for all budgets, in addition to explaining the hidden secrets of the area.

The guide is fully updated every few years, so the information is always fairly up to date. This is very useful when it comes to the restaurant and hotel sections, as their details can change frequently.
