Sumo wrestling is a competitive sport in Japan that dates back thousand of years. It is considered as one of the oldest martial arts in Japan. The rules of the sport are simple: force the other wrestler out of a circular ring. But tying the loincloth used by the players is more complicated than the game itself. In fact, a competitor loses the match when this piece of clothing comes off during the match.
The Mawashi, as the thick piece of clothing is called, also represents the art of tying in the Land of the Rising Sun. It is no wonder that it takes sixteen ways to actually tie it properly and securely. The Mawashi is made of heavy silk that is wide enough to cover the front and back of your private areas, and here is how you can tie it correctly. First, fold the fabric in two to make a long belt. Hold the belt between your legs and pull one end of it up to your chin. Let an assistant pull the other end of the cloth as you hold it against your back. Turn the strip of cloth clockwise around your belly then drop the end of it from your chin. The vertical piece of band hanging from your waist should be folded into the belt every time it passes at the front. When all of the fabric has been secured in front, fold the rest over then under the diagonal portion at the back then pull it upward. Secure the backside by inserting the end of the loincloth through the belt and pulling it tightly.
